| Call it an impulse buy, but I just couldn't let anyone else have this puppy! I swore to myself that I'd never buy another Whippet from anyone, and I never planned to own a race bred dog, but I did and now I do. Turns out that I'll be co-owning Lilly with Leslie Carroll (Entwood Borzoi) up in Eastern Pennsylvania. Lilly will be spending her time split between my house and Entwood. That's going to give her double the chance of getting to go out running on any given weekend! Lilly came home with me on July 12, 2009 accompanied by her litter brother, Tux, and on July 25, 2009 we made a dash down to the Outer Banks of North Carolina to do a photo shoot with my friend Jeannie Harrison of Close Encounters of the Furry Kind. I think we got some really nice pictures that day of Lilly and Tux. On August 3, 2009 we started an 8 week puppy obedience class and three days before she turned 5 months old, she passed the Canine Good Citizen (CGC) test. I was very proud of her!! Lilly came back in May 2010 from spending the winter in PA with Leslie (just in time for another photo shoot) but made it quite clear to everyone that she thinks she's a Borzoi. Therefore, she spent most of the last two years full time with Leslie. However, she is SO attached to Leslie & Tom that she is not yet sucessfully chasing the lure. I offered to take her back to my house and see if I can't get her running, and my offer was accepted on August 21, 2011. My plan is to take her to some Rally Obedience and agility classes to build up her self confidence, and allow her plenty of outside time in the back yard to try to build up her independence. Only time will tell if my plan will work or not, but right now it looks good. The fall of 2011 saw Lilly running a full 200 yard straight track when hand slipped in front of the starting box, she's now screaming when other dogs are loaded in the box and she lunges and spins when the box opens and the dogs run. She has also done a 150 yard run with one open turn at lure coursing practice. We are greatly encouraged. |
