May 26-28, 2007 - Memorial Day weekend & Mother Nature decided to give us a taste of
Summer - Hot, Hot, Hot. Saturday we were in New Jersey and ran in a 44 dog WRA meet,
Aren finished 11th and was the high scoring grade C dog, Kira finished 36th and barely
missed the Turtle award, but got a toy anyway for being the high scoring grade D dog.
Marseille got to run two programs and finished in 42nd place. George & Michelle Evans
were in attendance also with Ripley who finished as the high scoring FTE (First Time
Entered) dog. Meanwhile I hear that at Hanover, PA, Mia was picking up her first green JC
ribbon.
Sunday in New Jersey was a 30 dog NOTRA meet and Aren finished 10th, Kira was 25th
and Marseille was the 30th place dog! Today they needed Marseille to run to make the
points for the top dogs, and she was perfectly happy to help out. Ripley was again the high
scoring FTE dog, and looked strong at the end of a second day of racing. At Hanover Mia
seemed to pull a muscle in the middle of her run, so will have to try again for that second
JC ribbon.
Monday we shifted gears and went coursing at Hanover. There were 16 Open Whippets
and Marseille, Derby and Ripley ended up in a 4 way tie for 5th place on a long, difficult
course. I was very pleased with them. It was only Marseille's second trial and Derby's
third, so they are both still learning how the coursing game is played. Aren was tired after
two days of racing and neither of his runs looked very good and he placed third of the three
Field Champions entered. To finish off the long weekend, my Saluki, Zuli, got Best in
Field much to my surprise and delight. Zuli now has 35 of the required 45 points towards
her LCX2 title.
May 24, 2007 - In the mail today I received Kira's OFA results from her Hip X-rays and
she's got an "Excellent" rating! Way Cool! It'll be a week or so before it shows up on the
OFA web site, but eventually it will be there for all to see.
May 20, 2007 - We all went racing today! GSSA put on an all breed NOTRA race meet in
Marlton, NJ so everyone got to run. Both Ruby and Zuli earned their JOR titles (Junior Oval
Racer) and Marseille got to run in her very first race meet. She did get herself turned
around backwards in the starting box in the first program and the box operator gave a tap
on the back door & out she came. But she was so far behind the other dogs that she took
a short cut through the infield. The second program she got a little bit better a break, and
by the third program she was squirting out of the starting box like she'd been doing it all
her life.
Zuli finished 2nd and earned 1/2 an ORC point and 1/2 a National point. Ruby finished
5th of 10, Aren finished 10th of 20, Kira won another Turtle award for my 'collection' of
turtles on my dash board, and Marseille finished next to last.
May 10-14, 2007 - A long "weekend" saw me driving a van full of dogs all the way to
Madison, Wisconsin via Virginia Beach, VA. I dropped Ruby off with Pat Taylor on Thursday
morning, picked up Blake & Eve and headed to Virginia Beach to pick up Dallas. Then we
were out on the road headed north, spending a night with this friend and that friend and
arriving at the University of Wisconsin Vet School, Small Animal Clinic on Saturday
morning at 9:00 am. Dr. Rebecca Stepien and her colleagues spent 4 hours going over 6
of the Whippets that I'd brought along as part of the Cardiac study that they are doing.
Besides Blake, Eve & Dallas they also examined Parker, Bagel & Kira. These 6 dogs
represented 5 generations of dogs starting with Parker. This was a long drive, but I feel
strongly in doing whatever I can do to promote the health of the breed, and having these
dogs included in the study is important. Each dog had blood drawn for DNA testing, they
had their hearts listened to, an EKG, blood pressure testing and a color Doppler Echo
Cardiogram.
I finished off the long weekend with a photo shoot at Cape Henlopen State Park in Lewes,
Delaware with Close Encounters of the Furry Kind. I try to have pictures taken by Jeannie
and Bane Harrison as often as I can as the pictures are so beautiful, and I love having my
dogs pictures published in calendars and magazines. I've used pictures taken by the
Harrisons throughout this web site.
May 5, 2007 - You know what they say about the best laid plans..... That's a good way to
describe our weekend. I had four dogs entered in the CHAMP ASFA lure coursing trial
today, and had signed up for a seminar on "Ring Nerves" tomorrow. However, Aren
started coughing on Monday and by Friday Derby, Avery & Marseille were coughing also.
That means we've got kennel cough and the CHAMP trial was out of the question. Turns
out that my seminar tomorrow was cancelled by the seminar presenter anyway, so we
unexpectedly have an entire weekend at home. Boy, that just never happens!
