Ah, Zuli, where to begin? In the beginning, Pat Taylor and I found
ourselves with nothing to do one Saturday afternoon and decided to go
look at some Saluki puppies, since we'd never seen 8 week old Salukis.
By the end of the afternoon we'd bought Zuli as a pet. Call it an impulse
buy. We agreed with her breeder (Lisa Bunting) that if she turned out
good enough we'd show her - she finished in 14 shows - and if she'd run
I'd run her - she finished her AKC Field Championship in 6 trials with a
Best in Field.
Since then Zuli has won Best in Field somewhere around 15 times at last
count, including the ASFA Region 8 Invitational in 2003 and she
managed to finish as the #1 AKC lure coursing Saluki for 2006. She has
all her placements for her ASFA LCM, and just finished her AKC LCX-2
title on October 19, 2008. She also finished her Oval Racing Champion
title on November 9, 2008. Not bad for a pet.
Unless there is a lure moving, Zuli can't be trusted with other non-Salukis
which put an end to an otherwise promising agility career. So I've started
training her in tracking, a lovely sport that she can participate in with no
other dogs around and always on lead. We started a tracking class with
the Capital Dog Training Club on December 14, 2008 and have 6 tracking
classes over the 2009 winter season and so far she's doing pretty well.
We'll take it one day at a time and if she gets good enough, we'll see
about trying for a TD title to go after her name. Wouldn't that be a hoot!
I've also tried Zuli in UKC weight pulling, and in typical Saluki fashion, she
did one beautiful pull, found out I didn't really have food in my hand, and
that was that. I hope to actually do some training with her and see if we
can't compete in that venue. Absolutely need to keep the girl busy!

In August 2008 Zuli had an episode of pancreatitis which we think may have been caused by a cyst in or near her pancreas. We treated her symptoms with fluids and antibiotics and the issue resolved itself. I've posted her bloodwork and the final report from the internist for anyone interested.
