Our first tracking training session this morning - I met my friend Kris at a field that we've used before for laying tracks and we had one person come out from the kennel club to give it a try. All three of us laid two tracks each and each of the dogs did better on their second track than the first one. Zuli's first track was a straight track about 14 yards long, and she did the track pretty consistently about 18 inches to the left of the track, but that's the way the wind was blowing, so it seemed perfectly natural. Her second track, about 13 yards long, was a gentle curve to the left and she ran that track almost dead on.
Boy, it was sure tempting to lay another track for her, but I resisted. Next time I'll do a curved track to the right since our instructor has told us that with the curved tracks we should do an equal number of them, right and left. Seems to be very reasonable to me, since eventually these curved tracks will turn into tracks with corners and the turns could easily go either direction in a test. We ended up taking more time with the tracking than I'd expected, so we didn't get to do any obedience training today. :((( Everybody in my pack needs to work on stays - Ruby & Derby on Novice stays and Kira needs to start learning the out of sight stays! I think we'll try doing some out of sight ones here at home and see how that goes. ~~Joanne 2008-12-20 17:14:43 GMT
